Windows XP necessary tool
Use process explorer. Seriously. I used to be horribly confused by windows processes. Still am, but at least now I can see which processes have been spawned by the system (and who spawned them after that) instantly in a nice hierarchical way. I may still not have a good idea as to why svchost.exe has 5 copies running, but now at least I get a nice description of what it is, and any subprocesses that it spawns.

The best part about the hierarchy is that now I can make much better guesses about how windows loads up.

for a while I couldn't even boot without using process explorer to restart explorer.

Process explorer is so good it can get windows to run with no programs open and fewer services than the OS dev team thought was possible.

Yeah, first time I tried it was a relief too. Well, except for all the ugly stuff it uncovered on mom's computer.
